The passion of flamenco

Energiju strasti i dobre energije!

There are types of dance whose point is in good choreography and music concept. There are some dances in which it is easy to learn basic steps, but their purpose is to express emotion or reaction in people. Some are there to enrich your party and other social gatherings. And there is one dance that means all of that, and also gives you space for improvisation. For me, that is flamenco.

I still remember dearly the short period in my life when I attended local flamenco course, and all of those emotions and information I got about this dance. Flamenco, the dance of the Romani people of Andalusia. The dance in which are warped all their sufferings, emotions and pride, then esthetically shaped, and turned into a form that will last forever. Because, you see, every move in flamenco has its own role and meaning. The legs are there to give you the rhythm (compas). There are some basic steps you learn, but legs usually work based on your feeling for the rhythm in that moment that is given to a flamenco dancer (bailaores) by the guitar or a singer. The worst unwanted mistake is to get out of the rhythm.

And arms are there to define your style. To show the emotion, to give the message. They are usually in the air, bit you must pay attention for your elbows not to fall down - because exactly their posture should send the pride of the Romani people from Andalusia. They don`t beg. They stand straight, resistant to all the historical injustice. And the face is circling that pride, and is adding the defiance, sadness, pain, but also the strength and persistence.

And that`s why it`s no coincidence that the dance company where I attended the course was called La sed gitana (The thirst of the Gypsies). I remember the dance instructor Maja, and how she always reminded me of some andalusian gypsy girl. She has lived flamenco. With her face expression, with her moves. I especially remember one Marija, a young girl from Novi Sad, who went to Budapest, Hungary and opened the school of youknowwhat - flamenco. I remember her long swanlike neck, which gave her flamenco dance moves special grace and feminine sensuality, which I have never witnessed before. Because, the special thing about flamenco is that everybody can build his own style of dance. In the moment when he/she learns to feel flamenco music and turn it into a movement.

That Marija came to Novi Sad as a guest instructor. I remember her stories about how she dances in front of her boyfriend, and then in her swanlike moves she demonstrates how she dances for him and how he enjoys watching her. And I, lonely as I was, imagine how it would be wonderful to have a boyfriend and  to share that kind of passionate and sensual moments with him. Because, flamenco spreads the energy exactly like that. The energy of passion and good energy.

I remember trying hard to keep the rhythm and to follow all the chords. And after that to combine the moves of arms and legs, and not to look like a robot. And generally I have a sense of rhythm and dance. However, flamenco has tempted me not to give up, and constantly to practise and to chase the rhythm. On a bus station, at the electronic party, anywhere. Once I was dancing at 4am, in the apartment of my friend who was taking a shower. And afterwards the neighbours were complaining for my tapping. But, who cared.

A lot of time has passed from those few months of my flamenco experience, but the emotion and enjoyment in the aesthetics and sensuality of that dance has stayed. And accidentally, from that same friend of mine, I got one gorgeous long black and red skirt, that screams flamenco. Who knows, maybe I`ll go back to it one day. Because, flamenco doesn`t know the age limits. On contrary, it`s richer with your life experience.
